TAZEWELL, Va. — Aaron Donald "Mac" Buchanan, Sr., 95 years young, passed away Sunday, February 26, 2017 at his home in Tazewell, VA. Born January 17, 1922 at Gratton, VA, he was a son of the late L.C. and Mary Thompson Buchanan.
He was an active member of Main Street United Methodist in Tazewell, VA. Mac was a World War II Veteran, serving with the 461Anti-Aircraft Battalion, Baker Company and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of the Barns Beavers VFW Post #7136 and American Legion Post #133 of Tazewell, VA.
Mac served on the Town of Tazewell Fire Department for 50 years, 25 of those as fire chief. He owned the Buchanan Greenhouse and shared his love of gardening for 40 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine; daughter, Mary Ruth Buchanan and son, Roger Buchanan; brothers, George, Crockett, Russell, and Archie Buchanan; sisters, Leola Wagner, Annie Brown, Ella Mae Crawford, and Louise Bourne.
He is survived by one son, Aaron Donald Buchanan, Jr. and wife, Debbie of Tazewell, VA; three grandchildren, Aaron Buchanan and wife, Lindsay of Tazewell, VA, Chase Buchanan and wife, Rebekah of Abingdon, VA, and Angie Buchanan of Tazewell, VA; three great grandchildren, Mary Reyn, Kinley, and Jackson Buchanan.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 AM Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell, VA with the Reverend Anthony Grills and the Reverend Dr. Thomas A. Conley officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery at Gratton, VA where military graveside rites will be conducted by Barns Beavers VFW Post #7136 of Tazewell, VA and VA National Guard Honor Team of Gate City, VA. Members of the Town of Tazewell Volunteer Fire Department will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 PM Tuesday evening.
