Stephen Michael "Pete" Danko of Bluefield, Virginia peacefully passed away Monday, January 8th, 2018 at his home. He was the son of the late Michael Joseph and Julia Totri Danko. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brother Michael Danko.
Pete leaves behind a wife of 54 years Anne Wolford Danko; children Susan Neel (Eddie) of Charlotte, North Carolina, Paul Danko (Stephanie) of Abingdon, Virginia, and Julia Walsh (Michael) of Bayport, New York; grandchildren, Emily and Anna Danko, Michael and Paul Neel, and Markus Walsh; Sisters Theresa Hall of Detroit, Michigan and Louise Johnson of Daytona Beach, Florida.
Born December 24, 1938 in Pocahontas, Virginia, he was quickly nicknamed Pete which he carried throughout his life. He was a proud Pocahontas Indian, graduating from Pocahontas High School in 1956. He earned a Bachelor's degree from East Tennessee State University and quickly found sales to be his calling, spending most of his career working for Blizzard's, Inc. and served as President of Bluefield Hardware Company before retiring from Dan Corp, Inc. Until the time of his death, he was serving his second term as a Bluefield, Virginia Town Council Member where he worked diligently to try to bring more commerce and jobs to the Southwest Virginia area.
He was a third-generation member of St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church where he loved attending mass and was involved in the preservation of this historic church. Pete was a man dedicated to his family, faith, friends, and community. His greatest joys were being with this family and cheering on his grandchildren. His bold laugh and cheerful whistle will be terribly missed.
The family will receive friends from 6-8pm on Friday, January 12th at Dudley Funeral Home in Bluefield, Virginia. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted on Saturday, January 13th at 11am at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church in Pocahontas, Virginia officiated by Father Dan Brady. Interment will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery in Bluefield, Virginia. Eddie Neel, Michael Walsh, Gary Denardo, Mike Watson, Jody Chudina, and David Bowman will serve as pallbearers.
