Shirley Jean's Story
Shirley Jean (nee Tabor) Murakami, age 81, of Chicago, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Monday, January 29, 2018, at Seasons Hospice at Weiss Memorial Hospital in Chicago.
Shirley was born at Falls Mills, VA, on April 13, 1936, to the late Solomon P. Tabor, Sr. and Alma Zane Wagner Tabor of Falls Mills, VA. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Teruji "Ted" Murakami, and paternal grandparents, Hugh and Rebecca Sluss Tabor, and by her maternal grandparents, Charles McClelland Wagner, Sr. and Lottie Wagner. She also was preceded in death by brothers, Charles Addison "Buddy" Tabor, Carrol Dean Tabor, Solomon P. Tabor, Jr. and Jack Roland Tabor, and by sisters, Judith Elaine White, Charlotte Ann Ramsey, and Thelma Lee Thompson.
Survivors are her beloved children, Lisa Pollock and Linda Murakami (Joyce Keldsen), and granddaughter, Ashley Zamin (Matt), and great-granddaughter, Mia Zamin. Other survivors are sisters Betty Zane Kabara of Goodyear, AZ; Nancy Gale Smothers of Bluefield, VA, Margaret Eunice Zuliani of Garden Grove, CA, and Elizabeth Jane Smith of Princeton, WV, and Aunt Eunice Wagner of Bluefield, VA. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Shirley graduated from Graham High School in Bluefield, VA, in 1953 and then went to nursing school at Jefferson School of Nursing in Roanoke, VA, where she obtained her Registered Nurses Degree in 1956. After graduating from 3 years of nursing school, she was later employed as an R.N. at Ravenswood Hospital in Chicago, and she was always referred to there as that "southern nurse". She had made her home in Chicago ever since graduating from nursing school. Shirley was of the Methodist Faith, and as a child she attended and was a member of Macedonia United Methodist Church in Falls Mills, VA.
