Sharon's Story

Text size

Sharon Ann Blackburn, of Richmond, VA died on June 24, 2017 at her residence. Born November 22, 1950, she was the daughter of Harry and Anna Hornick Switch of Welch, WV and the sister of Cathy Cook, Barbara Baker, and Judy Inscore, "the Sisterhood".
Sharon was a graduate of the Class of 1968 at Welch High School where she met her future husband as they began the ninth grade. Shortly after graduation she married her childhood sweet heart and "only love", Doug Blackburn. Easter 2017 marked 53 years since they first went to see a Walt Disney Movie, held hands, and committed to spend their life together.
Sharon was a great Mother to a son, Doug III and daughter Kelly Charles. She was a proud and doting Grand Mother to Keisha Charles Jones, Tori Charles, and Brittany Charles. She was a beaming Great Grand Mother to Lilly Jones. She was so happy to spend a week with the "Peaches" cruising to Atlantis in the Bahamas in early June.
After marriage Sharon and Doug moved to Morgantown, WV for college. As the President of the Dames Club, spouses of students, she earned her PhT degree for "putting hubby through". After college, they moved to Beckley, WV to raise their family. After Kelly began grade school, Sharon completed her Nursing degree. In 1986, Sharon and family moved to Belmont, MA where Sharon trained as an RN at Mt. Auburn Hospital, a Harvard Teaching Hospital and at Mc Lean, Harvard's world class Psychiatric Hospital. In January 1990, Sharon, Doug, and Kelly moved to Lexington, KY where Sharon became the Director of Admissions of the Claremont, Kentucky's first assisted living community.
In July 1999, Sharon and Doug moved to Richmond, VA with their fourth Australian Terrier, Ridge. Sharon loved to read and travel. She visited most of the US States, as well as the Eastern Caribbean, Australia, and Bali.
Sharon leaves Doug, "her dear companion", her fifth Australian Terrier, Mattie, her son Doug, daughter Kelly, Son-in-Law Mitchell Charles, three granddaughters, Keisha and husband Tyler Jones, Tori, Brittany, and a great grand-daughter Lilly to love and laugh at the memory of their "Memaw". Sharon reunites with her four Austalian Terriers: Brandy, Meg, Kylie, and Ridge at the "Rainbow Bridge" for a wonderful reunion.
