Rudolph Alonzo Zemonek

Rudolph "Zem" Alonzo Zemonek, age 85 of Greensboro, NC died Monday, April 22, 2019 of natural causes. Born August 2, 1933 in Scarbro, WV he was a son of the late Anthony W. Zemonek and Helen Duda Zemonek and was husband of his late wife, Elizabeth Harman Zemonek. Prior to the medical and physical challenges in Rudolph's later years, he enjoyed bowling, bridge, golf, and boating.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, who died in a car wreck a week before his high school graduation in 1948, and a grandson, Bradley Hudson, age 5 who died of cancer in 1993.
Rudolph graduated Collins High School (Oak Hill, WV) in 1951 and Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1957 with a Bachelor Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering. His first job was with Curtiss Wright Research in Quehanna, PA who disbanded after a couple years. He was licensed by the Atomic Energy Commission to operate "swimming pool type" nuclear reactors located at Penn State and Curtiss Wright. Rudolph was then employed by Western Electric (AT&T) in 1959 where he worked 30 years in several management and engineering positions and retired from AT&T in 1990. He was in residence at Raytheon, Western Electric's subcontractor, where he was Western Electric's representative on the Configuration Control Board along with the Army's SENSCOM and Raytheon's representatives. During his 30 years, he took post graduate courses at Penn State, Johns Hopkins, and Duke.
He is survived by one daughter, Christian Hudson Sheppard and husband, Duane of Richmond, VA; two sons, James A. Zemonek and wife, Catherine of Cary, NC, and Richard D. Zemonek and wife, Angela of Raleigh, NC; nine grandchildren: Amanda Hudson Fowler (30) and husband, Travis; Johnathan Zemonek (31) and wife, Jessica; Sarah Zemonek (28); Jacob Hudson (25); Jordan Zemonek (24); Thomas Zemonek (21); Benjamin Zemonek (21); Wesley Zemonek (19); and Aaron Zemonek (16).
Family and friends will gather for graveside services at 2 PM Friday, April 26, 2019 at Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell, VA next to his deceased wife, Elizabeth. Flowers are not desired.
