Raymond Darrel McGlothlin, age 91 of Doran, Va. died Friday, March 16, 2018 in Kingsport, Tennessee, with his children by his side. A native of Kingsport, Raymond was born on January 1, 1927, the son of the late Henry Moscoe McGlothlin and Gracie Day McGlothlin.
Raymond was preceded in death by his loving wife, Jean Jewell McGlothlin in 1983, by his daughter Pam McGlothlin in 2013, by his infant son Johnny in 1952, and by his grandson Bradley Salyers in 1993. He was also preceded in death by his sister Faye McGlothlin, his step-father Albert Goss, and his brother Wayne Goss.
Survivors include his sons Darrel McGlothlin of Richlands, VA and Jimmy McGlothlin of Cedar Bluff, VA, his daughters, Donna Peterson of Port Orange, FL, Connie McGlothlin of Dandridge, TN and Melissa McMurray of Bristol, VA, grandsons Brian McGlothlin and Roderick McGlothlin, granddaughters Danica Angles, Mariah Lewis, Mackenzie Lewis and Kenna McMurray, and four great-grandchildren. Raymond is also survived by three brothers, Macel McGlothlin, Ronnie McGlothlin and C.A. Goss, and by a sister, Marie Goss.
Raymond enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 16 during WWII and served aboard the submarine rescue ship USS Penguin and the mine sweeper USS Lucid. Raymond was a licensed pilot and avid motorcyclist up until his death. He was a retired UMWA member and the former co-owner of Tru-Image Photo in Richlands, VA. During his retirement years Raymond lived for periods of time in both Israel and Paraguay doing volunteer work for local Christian schools, and lived for a period of time in Cheyenne, Wyoming overseeing the renovation of the dome on the Wyoming state capitol.
Raymond was loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 Tuesday afternoon, March 20, 2018, in the Singleton Funeral Service chapel with Kevin McGlothlin officiating.
Friends are invited to visit with the family at the conclusion of the funeral service. A private family entombment service at the Clinch Valley Cemetery Mausoleum will be held at a later time.
