Myralin Anne

(1934 - 2018)
Myralin Anne "Nickie" Gillenwater Trayer of Hixson, TN, passed away on Wednesday, 19 December 2018, of Alzheimer's disease. She was 84. Nickie was born 18 September 1934 in Gate City, Scott County, VA, the daughter of Robert Cossie Gillenwater and Anne Mae McConnell Gillenwater.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Bobby Leon and Leo, her parents, and a grandson, Caleb Shafer. She is survived by her siblings Richard Curtis Gillenwater (Janice) and Patricia June Mott (Dennis); her devoted husband of 65 years, David McGuire Trayer; daughters Carol Allison Orwin (Jim), Catherine Jane Shafer (Melvin), and Cheryl Dianne Norris (Kieth); 14 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren.
A precocious child, Nickie excelled in academics and music, and was the salutatorian of her Shoemaker High School (Gate City, VA) graduating class. Soon Nickie was off to Emory and Henry College, where she met the love of her life. He was enchanted not only by her obvious beauty, but by her intellect and quick wit. They soon married, and as his career progressed, they moved about the country. Along the way, Nickie continued her education, graduating Summa Cum Laude from the University of North Alabama in 1982, and receiving a Master of Arts in English Literature from the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 1984.
Nickie remained an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she served as a leader and teacher of children, youth, and adults, and as a pianist and organist, for most of her adult life. Nickie was loved wherever she went. She had a way of making people feel good about themselves. She was the epitome of love and acceptance. We, her daughters, always enjoyed hearing stories of her childhood and the games she and her siblings and cousins played. She and our father were best friends as well as husband and wife, and they made our home a safe and happy haven, one where all who entered felt loved and accepted. We who adored her miss her bright, vivacious beauty of body and soul. We are comforted that she is happy and restored to her former intellect. Her last act of service was to donate her body to the University of Tennessee at Memphis Medical School for research.
The family is grateful to the staff at Hixson Morning Pointe for their tender, loving care of our mother for the last few years.
We have decided, at her request, that there will be a private family memorial service. We ask for your respect for her request that the memorial be private.
If you wish to pay tribute to this magnificent woman, donations to the Alzheimer's Association for purposes of research are requested in lieu of flowers.
