Melvin Swartz, 86, of Gary, WV, passed away, Sunday, July 2, 2017, at McDowell Nursing and Rehabilitation in Gary, WV.
Born, August 11, 1930, in Filbert, WV, he was the son of the late James B. and Ruth Smith Swartz. He was a resident of Gary his whole life, he retired from U.S. Steel in Gary WV. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict; a member of the American Legion Post 8 Welch, and a member of 40 & 8 Welch. He was also a past member of the Moose Lodge, and a member of Anderson Memorial Presbyterian Church in Welch. He was a very avid Bowler and Golfer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by, his first wife Geneva Blankenship Swartz, one brother James "Buggy" Swartz, three sisters Shirley Hornbuckle, Betty Rose, Phyllis Stepp.
Survivors include, his wife, Peggy Casteel Swartz of Gary, WV, one son, Roger Swartz and wife Tara of Pocahontas, VA, one grandson, Carson Swartz of Pocahontas, VA, one step grandson, Austin Miller, of Pocahontas, VA, two sisters, Nancy Fine and husband Johnny of Gary, WV, Mildred Barber of Gary, WV, special sister in law, Lynette Addair of Bristol, TN, brother in law Glen Hornbuckle of Princeton, WV, and, numerous Nieces and Nephews.
Funeral Services will be conducted, Friday, July 7, 2017, at 11 A.M. from the Fanning Funeral Home Chapel in Welch, WV, with Pastor Chuck Hammond and Pastor Ollie Parson officiating, burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA; where Military Graveside Rights will be conducted by the V.F.W. Post 1144, Iaeger, WV. Friends may call Thursday, July, 6, 2017 from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. at the Fanning Funeral Home Chapel in Welch, WV. Friends and Family will serve as pallbearers.
