Mary's Story

Yorktown: Mary L. McComas, 89, died April 21, 2017. Mary had a love for people and especially family gatherings. Easter egg hunts, family cookouts and Thanksgiving dinner were joyous times in her home. Mary loved Christmas the most. She instilled in all her children a love of the Christmas holiday that they will always take with them. In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, Mary faithfully served her Heavenly Father for most of her life. She was a Sunday School teacher, choir director and Vacation Bible School teacher. Mary was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary for the Peninsula Rescue Mission for 30 years, and also worked tirelessly in their thrift store. Mary made many friends along the way and touched many lives. She will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Beauford Davis McComas; parents, Ulysses and Eunice Davis; brothers, Robert Davis and James Davis; sister, Martha McLaurin; and daughter, Sharon Smith.
She is survived by children, Barbara McCormick (Charles), Terry Knight (Marc), David McComas (Teresa), and Toni Stalnaker (Dave); grandchildren, Sonia Oakley (Kerry), Mary Simmons, James Plessinger (Liz Edwards), Scott Plessinger (Jennifer), Kim Anderson (Brett), Matthew Burcher (Tangela Duncan), Joshua Knight (Angie), Erin Snow (Wade) and Jared McComas (Jackie Diggs); 13 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.
Graveside Funeral Service officiated by Reverend Lindsay Poteat will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 25, 2017, at Peninsula Memorial Park Cemetery. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday, April 24, 2017, from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point.
The family sends a special thank you to the Mennowood staff, especially those who worked in the dining room and kitchen, who always took good care of Mary and made her feel special.
In Marys memory the family desires for memorial contributions to be given to Peninsula Rescue Mission, 3700 Huntington Avenue, Newport News, VA 23607.
