Mary Elizabeth Leedy, 81 of Bluefield, VA, passed away Thursday, August 17, 2017 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center. Born in Welch, WV, she was the daughter of the late Robert Juel and Audrey Anna Harris Leedy.
Mary was an award-winning ceramics craftsman and showed for many years at the State Fair. Her life-long passion was education and her students. She was always happy to see former students and hear of them. Mary was very active with Special Olympics and served on the Mercer County Humane Society Board. She retired in 1998 after teaching in the Mercer County School System for 33 years. She taught at Brushfork Elementary and Wade Elementary in Special Education. Mary was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bluefield, WV.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by 2 brothers: Timothy Ted Leedy and Robert J. Leedy, Jr.
She will be lovingly and affectionately missed by her brothers: James S. Leedy of Bluefield, VA and Howard A. Leedy and wife, Priscilla of Bluefield, WV; niece: Nicole Leedy and husband, Fred Morlan of Lexington, KY; aunt: Jean Turman of Charlottesville, VA; cousins: Bonnie Dillon of Boones Mill, VA, Mary Sue Vogelsong of Beckley, WV; Tom Turman, Bill Turman and Ann Turman all of Charlottesville, VA. A special thanks to her compassionate caregivers: Donnie Pearcey and Wanda Belcher.
A memorial service to celebrate Mary's life will be held, Friday, August, 18, 2017 at Dudley Memorial Chapel at 7:30 P.M. with Minister Tony Reed officiating. Friends may visit with the family Friday at the funeral home from 6:00 P.M. until the hour of the service.
In keeping with her wishes, her body has been cremated.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like you to consider making donations to the Humane Society or to the Wade Center in her honor.
