PETERSTOWN — Psalm 119:165; "Great peace have they which love thy law; and nothing shall offend them."
John Randolph Spencer, 74, of Peterstown, WV, passed into the awaiting arms of Christ on Friday, March 24, 2017, at his home surrounded by his family after a valiant fight with cancer. His devotion to his family and his firm belief in God and unwavering faith supported him and gave him a peaceful passing to his long-awaited home in Heaven. Our comfort lies in knowing that this is not the end, but just the beginning.
Born in the coal mining town of Kingston, WV, on September 26, 1942, he was the second of twelve children born to Rev. Howard and Lorraine Ingram Spencer.
John was a true servant of God. Since his father was a Baptist minister, John was encouraged and taught from an early age about God's love and became a born again Christian when he was seven years of age. John was a devout Christian and lived his life to reflect his testimony. He was a devoted and faithful member of Ballard Baptist Church. He served in numerous leadership roles in his church including being a current Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent and teacher, was active in the Jail and Nursing Home ministries, and was an admired and respected youth leader. He, many times, witnessed for the Lord in song and that is how he will be remembered by many. John's presence was a powerful, yet quiet, inspiration to many.
He was one of the founding members and current President of Ballard Christian School, a Christian ministry began by his late father, Rev. Howard Spencer. John was a scholar and student of God's word and spent many hours volunteering his time and labor to build and maintain the school.
He was a retired employee of Radford Arsenal, where he was a chemist. He had also worked at Celanese early in his career.
He was a graduate of Peterstown High School and Concord College.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Howard and Lorraine Ingram Spencer; an infant sister, Mary Ellen Spencer; his nephew, Leslie Spencer; his brothers in-law, O.L. Faris and Matney Jones; and his father and mother in-law, Walter and Glenna Lester Jones.
A devoted husband and father, he is survived by who John termed as, "The Love of my life," his loving wife of 51 years, Patty Jones Spencer and their two adoring sons, John Spencer, Jr. and wife Regina of Peterstown and Michael Spencer and his wife Teresa of Pembroke Pines, Florida. Seven grandchildren whom he adored and treasured, Logan, Haley, Elijah, Noah, Kristen, Kylee, and Kody.
John also leaves his eight brothers, Howard Spencer and wife Nila of Glen Lyn, Virginia, Rev. Joe Spencer and wife Becky, Rev. Dan Spencer and wife Kathy, Tom Spencer and wife Rhonda, Bill Spencer and wife JoAnn, Sam Spencer and wife Belinda, Rev. Dave Spencer and wife Teresa, all of Ballard, WV, and Evangelist Tim Spencer and wife Melodie of Beaver, WV; two sisters, Joyce Spencer Faris and Rebecca (Becky) Spencer Prunesti and husband Lou, all of Ballard, WV; a devoted brother in-law, David Jones and wife Bonnie of Peterstown, WV; numerous nephews, nieces, and his church family.
On Tuesday, March 28, 2017, we will celebrate the life and home going of John Randolph Spencer at 11:00 AM at Ballard Baptist Church. His brothers, Rev. Joe Spencer, Rev. Dan Spencer, Evangelist Tim Spencer, and his brother and pastor Rev. Dave Spencer will officiate. Burial will follow in the family cemetery, New Haven Cemetery on Adair Ridge Road in Ballard, WV.
