Janet Marie Slade Smith of Richlands passed peacefully on April 21, 2019 after several years of declining health. Janet was born January 9, 1933, to Roy and Ethel Slade, the third of four children. Her early years were spent on a farm in the Bluestone community. She was a 1951 graduate of Graham High School. After her marriage to the late Robert Earnest (Poss) Smith, she moved to Richlands in 1958 where she lived the remainder of her life. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers and two step sons.
Over the course of more than thirty years Janet became well known and loved by hundreds of children and their families through her work as a teacher's assistant at Richlands Elementary. She was a long time member of the Disciples of Christ denomination having been a member of Richlands and Cliffield Christian Churches. Always an active community member, Janet was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Rebekah's, and the Valley Community Workers. In her leisure time she enjoyed reading and needlework. An exceptional cook, Janet loved sharing her gifts from her kitchen with family and friends.
Janet is survived by daughters: Virginia (Mike) Hart and Ellen Apple; sons: Ed (Jackie) Smith, Steve Slade, and Danny (Robin) Slade, daughter-in-law, Linda Smith. Granny Jan is also survived by her greatest joy her 10 grandchildren: Matt Hart, Kyle Hart, Rhiannon Smith, Grat Slade, Stephanie Hylton, Summer Smith, Jessica Akers, Johnna Mattero, Beth Robinett, Shawna Justus. She is also survived by 13 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
The family would like to express deepest appreciation to Appalachian Agency caregivers Mendy Smith and Carla Honaker for their kindness and loving care these past eight years.
The family respectfully requests no flowers but instead donations be made in her memory to A Child Shall Lead Them of Tazewell, 623 Tazewell Avenue, Tazewell, VA 24651 or The Good Samaritan Food Pantry of Richlands, P O Box 523, Richlands, VA 24641.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12 noon Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff, VA.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 12 noon Wednesday at the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel with Pastor Chris White officiating. Burial will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens Cemetery at Claypool Hill, VA. Grandsons and family will serve as pallbearers.
