James Alexander's Story
James Alexander "Jim" Richardson, of Jewell Ridge, VA, passed away peacefully at his home in Jewell Ridge, VA on September 28, 2017.
Born in Tire Hill, PA to the late Scottish immigrants, Alex and Janet Richardson on October 4, 1928, Jim was a lifelong resident of the Jewell Ridge community. He was the owner of Richardson Coal Company and was a retiree of the Pittston Coal Co. Jim was a man who worked diligently to provide for his family, which he cherished. He was a 1948 graduate of Richlands High School, having had the honor to play football under the leadership of legendary Coach Ernie Hicks. Later he would coach his own sons in midget league football with the Jewell Ridge Red Raiders. Jim loved big band music, NASCAR, Jerry Clower humor, and especially his coffee and cigars. He was a member of Richlands Masonic Lodge #318 AF&AM along with his son, Avery, and grandson, Ryan Richardson. He was also a member of the Shriners.
Jim married his high school sweetheart, Katherine Smith Richardson, 67 years ago and was immensely proud of the family they began. They made a loving home and welcomed three sons and three daughters. Sons, Avery "Sandy" and wife, Diana of Richlands, VA; Mike and wife, Marquetta of Jewell Ridge, VA; Bill and wife, Kokie of Richlands, VA; Daughters, Missy Baker and husband, Rick of Brentwood, TN; Nancy Scott and husband, Tom of Brentwood, TN; and Edye Schau and husband, Dan of Woodbury, TN.
Fourteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren along with their spouses leaves 47 immediate family members to mourn Jim's passing. Jim is also survived by his sister, Margaret Morgan of Huntington, WV and also by many loving in-laws, nieces, and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his loving son, Mike; granddaughter, Victoria Grace Schau; sisters, Helen Wade and Isabelle Payne; and his brother, David Richardson.

Memorial services will be conducted on Saturday, September 30, 2017 at 1:00 PM at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until the time of the service. Inurnment will follow at the Smith Family Cemetery on Smith Ridge near Jewell Ridge, Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Shriner's Hospital for Children, 2900 N. Rocky Pointe Drive, Tampa, Florida 33607.
