Howard Dean, 86 of Bluefield, VA, departed this life Tuesday, October 03, 2017 at Commonwealth Senior Living, Cedar Bluff, VA.
Born April 24, 1931, he was the last surviving child of the late Garland and Alice Dean of Wise, VA. Howard graduated from JJ Kelly High School in Wise, VA. He was captain of the football team and was voted must athletic and most popular. He was drafted into the US Army in 1953, where he achieved the rank of Sergeant. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his service and dedication on the front lines as a Medical Aid Man. He returned from war and remained active in the Army Reserve. He attended Clinch Valley College, tried out for the Pittsburgh Pirates before returning home to meet and marry the love of his life, Janie Starnes Dean in 1955. Howard moved to Bluefield where he was the manager of Time Finance, then became an officer for the Bank of Tazewell County. He spent 27 years in sales for Ramey Chevrolet in Tazewell, VA. He loved his country and believed in our rights. He served as registrar for Tazewell County for several years and also worked the polls during election times.
Howard was a member of Memorial Baptist Church, Bluefield, VA. He taught Sunday school and served as a deacon many times. Howard lived his life based on 3 principles: GOD, FAMILY and COUNTRY. He never met a stranger, never turned down someone in need, he was generous, kind and giving. He was tough when he needed to be and was always on the side of the underdog. He will be missed.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings: Claude, Ray, Teme, Roy Oliver, Clyde, Vollie, John, Darryl, Walter, Hubert, Robert and Ruth; his beloved wife: Janie Starnes Dean and a still born son.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving daughter, Lisa Dean Williams and son-in-law, Robert, with whom he made his home the last 2 years; many nieces and nephews.
A service to celebrate Howard's life will be held on Friday, October 6, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at Memorial Baptist Church with Rev Bill Lykins and Rev. Hurley Shortt officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens with the Mercer County Veteran's Honor Guard conducting military rites.
Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, October 5, 2017 at Memorial Baptist Church from 6-8:00 P.M.
