Howard Burton's Story
Howard Burton "Shorty" Candler, 91, of Bluefield, WV went home to be with the Lord and His Angels on Sunday, October 15, 2017 at the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, WV following a long illness.
Born December 31, 1925 in Kellysville, WV; he was a son of the late Joseph B. Candler and the late Lula Mae Whitlow Candler.
Shorty served his country proudly and was honorably discharged from the US Navy, serving in WWII on the BB64/US Wisconsin. He enjoyed riding motorcycles with friends and family; hunting; fishing; and was a member of the American Legion of Bluefield; and a member of the VFW in Bluefield. He received his primary education in Peterstown, WV and later attended the Glenwood Welding College, following his education made a career as a welder. Howard and his wife, Betty are both members of the Maple View Church of Christ in Bluefield, WV.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Russell Candler; a daughter, Lisa D. Candler Wells; a granddaughter, Heather Wells; three brothers; and two sisters.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 69 years, Betty Candler of Bluefield, WV; a son, Phillip Candler and wife, Jennifer Saddler-Candler of Bluefield, WV; a daughter, Jessica Terry and husband, Bruce of Bluefield, VA; seven grandchildren, Ian Candler of Austin,TX, Jacob Tibbs of Bluefield, VA, Benjamin Tibbs of Princeton, WV, Peyton Terry of Bluefield, VA, Bruce Terry IV of Bluefield, VA, Taylour Candler of Princeton, WV, and Bailee Candler of Princeton, WV; a brother, Ralph Candler of Fayetteville, WV; two sisters, Evelyn Pennington of Princeton, WV and OlaMae Patton of Rural Retreat, VA; several nieces; nephews, extended family; and friends.
A Memorial Service to celebrate the life of Howard Burton "Shorty" Candler will be held 2:00PM Monday, October 23, 2017 at the Maple View Church of Christ, 194 Robins Rest Road, Bluefield, WV with Sr. Minister Caleb Penwell assisted by Tony Reed. Military Honors and Final Salute will be performed by the Mercer County Veterans Honor Guard and Presentation of Colors by the VFW, Bluefield.
Friends may gather with the family from 1:00PM until time of the service Monday at the Church.
