LAKE SHAWNEE Howard Charles Burnette, 89, of Lake Shawnee, died Thursday, December 14, 2017. Born July 5, 1928 at Weyanoke, he was the son of the late Ophus Burnette and Maggie Short Burnette.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Anna F. Phillips Burnette; two sons, Dewey Burnette and Charles Edward (Eddie) Burnette; one grandson, Vernon Hasson, Jr.; one sister, Lilly O'Dell; and five brothers, Ophus Burnette, Amos Burnette, Elmer Burnette, Clifton Burnette and Matthew Burnette.
Mr. Burnette was a veteran of the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy having served in the Korean War. He was retired from National Wire in Baltimore, Maryland. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Lake Shawnee. He was active at the Princeton Senior Citizens Center, loved gardening and loved his grandchildren.
Survivors include three daughters, Rhonda Burnette-Hasson, Serena Burnette-Casto and Aaron Casto of Rock and Denise Burnette-Kirk and Robert of Bluefield; two sisters, Margaret Crews of North Carolina and Sylvia Carr and Randolph of Princeton; eight grandchildren, Renee Burnette-Ortiz, Trisha Burnette, Melissa Kirk, Shawn Kirk, Tera Hasson-Bleman, Jonathan Casto, Summer Hasson and Craig Casto; nine great-grandchildren; and one great, great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 16, 2017 at the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Larry Dyer officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton where military honors will be conducted by the Mercer County Veterans Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until service hour at the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton.
