Henry's Story

Henry Esaw Farmer, 88 years of age of the Hoot Owl section of Grundy, VA, went home to be with the Lord, Friday, October 20, 2017 at the Commonwealth Senior Living at Cedar Bluff following an extended illness. Born in Coeburn, VA, he was the son of the late Henry Esaw Sr. and Della (Gayness) Farmer. He was a proud resident of the Hoot Owl section of Grundy, VA, for over 80 years and was a member of the Grundy United Methodist Church for 75-years serving in many positions during that time. He graduated from Grundy High School in 1948 and attended Emory and Henry College.
Henry was a member of Sandy Valley Lodge No. 17 AF&AM, Grundy, VA, Kazim Shrine Temple in Roanoke, VA, and the Scottish Rite. He was very involved in his community and served in many different capacities. He served on the Social Service Board, helped run the Little League Baseball program in Buchanan County many years, and worked with the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and was an employee of American Electric Power Co. for 42-years, working as a meter reader to line foreman, where he also taught classes at the Lineman's Training School in Abingdon, VA. Henry was an outdoor enthusiast and one of his greatest accomplishments was hiking the entire 2,200 miles of the Appalachian Trail. He also owned Buchanan Electric, Farmers Security and was a night watchman for Securitas in Grundy, VA.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Steven Farmer, his brother, Edward Farmer, and his sisters, Lola Moller and Ann Barnes.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 59-years, Janice Elizabeth (Nichols) Farmer, Grundy, VA; 1-Son: Henry Farmer, Longs, SC; 2-Daughters: Cynthia Lynn Farmer (Chris) Webb, Tazewell, VA, Beverly Gentzler, Grundy, VA; 6-Grandchildren: Leigh Farmer, Lindsay Farmer, Alex (Nicki) Farmer, Michael (Stephanie) Webb, Matthew (Emily) Webb and Lauren Gentzler; 6-Great-Grandchildren: Seth Webb, Sage Webb, Mia Webb, Ruby Farmer Maass, Chloe Farmer Maass and Stephen Farmer; 2-Sisters: Doris (Don) Keene and Shirley Looney.
Also, survived by various nieces and nephews.
Memorial Services for Henry Esaw Farmer will be conducted Saturday, October 28, 2017 at 5:00 P.M. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. J.N. Howard and Rev. Tom Witten officiating. Friends may call at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Saturday from 3:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M.
Masonic Rites will be conducted at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel by members of Sandy Valley Lodge No. 17 AF&AM.
