Helen's Story

BLUEFIELD, WV Helen Louise Bell, 92, of Bluefield, West Virginia passed away suddenly Wednesday, January 3, 2018. Born on July 27, 1925 in Johnson City, Tennessee she was the heart and soul of the family.
She was raised by her dear mother, Emily Jones Bell Mitchell, after her father, Walker Hamner Bell, died when she was only 7 years old at which time she became a second mother to her four younger sisters.
She was preceded in death by her beloved mother and father and step father, Thomas Mitchell, and also by her dear sisters, little Lucy Carolynne Bell, and most recently, sweet Betty Bell Eley as well as brothers-in- law Carlos Ferrell, Thomas Stuart Eley Jr, and Joe Ascue.
She leaves a grieving family of two devoted sisters, Emily Bell Ascue and Phyllis Bell Ferrell as well as loving nieces and nephews of: Dr. Joseph Thomas Ascue, Alvin Walker Ascue and Donna Fleming, Kimberly Ascue Shaw and Roger Martin, Cynthia Eley Stalnaker and Glenver Stalnaker and Sharon Eley Fogarty and James Fogarty. She is greatly grieved by grand nieces and nephews of: Kimberly Mayre Ascue, Christopher Ascue, Nicolas Shaw and Emily Stock Shaw, Logan Ascue and Thomas James Fogarty.
Ms. Bell started working for the telephone company when she was just a teenager and continued unfailingly until she retired 46 years later with an impeccable service record. She was a member of the Virginia Avenue United Methodist Church in Bluefield, VA. She was gifted gardener and baker and the focal point of the entire family. Her loss will be profound among all who have been blessed to have known and loved her.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, January 7, 2018 at 2:00 at Mercer Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Larry Ramey officiating. Victor Farmer will present the Eulogy with musical offerings from James Hampton rendering vocals and Kim Bowman Smith accompanying on piano. The family will receive friends at the Chapel on Sunday from 1:00 until the service hour.
Burial will follow at Monte Vista Park Cemetery in Green Valley. Pallbearers will be: Chris Ascue, Tommy Fogarty, Nic Shaw, Logan Ascue, Blair Allen and Roger Martin.
