PRINCETON — Sarah Evelyn Wood Bernard, 89, of Princeton, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ early Saturday morning, February 18, 2017 at Westwood Center. Born September 15, 1927 at Crumpler, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Frederick Wood and Ida Dove Hall Wood.
She was a 1945 graduate of Northfork High School and a 1949 graduate of West Virginia University where she obtained a degree in Education. She remained an avid WVU football fan throughout her life. Retiring from her teaching career in 1989 from Mercer County, she previously taught in McDowell and Monongalia counties. She was a member of the Princeton Presbyterian Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Fred Wayne Bernard; three brothers, James D. Wood, B. Frederick Wood and Robert L. Wood; three sisters-in-law, Ann McMillion Wood, Annalee Wood and Elizabeth Pennington Wood; and a great-niece, Lucy Wood. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors include three nephews, James D. Wood, II and wife Barbara of Princeton, Richard H. Wood of Fort Townsend, WA and Ben Wood of Bel Air, MD; two nieces, Judith Wood Bartley of Charlottesville, VA and Catherine Wood Cox of Bel Air, MD; three great nephews, Richard Cadieux of Reston, VA, Andre Cadieux and wife Jenny of Charlottesville, VA and James D. Wood, III of Bland, VA; one great niece, Callie Bouchard of Charlottesville, VA; three great-great neices, Autumn Wood of Bland, VA, Abigail Wood of Bluefield and Samantha Cadieux of Charlottesville, VA; one great-great-great niece, Juniper Rose Wood of Bland, VA; and a host of friends at The Havens and church, her former students and other special friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 20, 2017 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Ed Pettus officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton.
The family will receive friends Monday, February 20, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. until service hour at the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton.
