Eva Ellen Shumate, 97 of Princeton Towers and formerly of Rt. 2 Bluefield died Tuesday December 19, 2017 at Glen Wood Park Retirement Center.
Born November 2, 1920 in Floyd County, VA she was a daughter of the late Elmer and Elizabeth Ratliff.
She was a homemaker and a lifelong member of Thompson Chapel United Methodist Church. Eva was a member of the United Methodist Women and in the church choir for 33 years. Eva enjoyed being with family and had a witty sense of humor. At age 50 she became a care giver for 11 years, then worked as an egg crater for Graystone for 4 years.
Eva was the last living member of her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband Ray Shumate, and a son Henry "Hank" Shumate. She was an angel on earth, and she felt very blessed and walked closely with the Lord.
She is survived by 3 grandchildren, Lecia Cline of Bluefield, WV, Sandra Cundiff (Eugene) of Minnesota and Rodney Shumate of Salem, VA, great grandchildren Dakota Cline of Bluefield, WV and Miranda Cline of King, NC, great-great grandchildren Addison Cline and Grayson Bell.
Special caregiver for over 5 years Debbie Cordle, adopted precious great granddaughter Jessica Wood, 7 nieces and nephews, niece in law Linda Ratliff and dear friend for over 50 years Shirley Dillow.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday December 21, 2017 at Mercer Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Randy Sargent and Rev. David Damewood officiating. Interment will follow at the Shumate Cemetery in Bluefield.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 9:00 a.m. until the service hour.
