MATOAKA Eugene W. Stables, Jr., 90, passed peacefully to his Heavenly Home on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 surrounded by his wife and family at his home. Born November 26, 1926 at Algonguin, he was the son of the late Eugene Walter "Bud" Stables, Sr. and Annie Wiley Stables.
Mr. Stables was a very hard working man and exceled at several different trades. He was a coal miner, superintendent for Consolidated Coal Company, a carpenter, a fisherman and a great husband,
father and pawpaw to his loving family. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of Rich Creek Baptist Church in Spanishburg.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, James Stables, Garland Stables, Lee Stables and Tommy Stables; and three sisters, Dolly Smith, Shirley Williams and Nellie Sigmon.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Gertrude Graham Stables; two daughters, Diane Syres and husband Howard of Rock and Carolyn Akers and husband Dan, Jr. of Charlotte, NC; four Grandchildren, Michelle Osborn, Heather Mills, Wendy Pryor and Dan Akers, III; five grand-grandchildren, Lauren Pryor, Courtney Mills, Jackson Pryor, Colin Osborn and Caitlin Mills, he affectionately called them "his babies;" two sisters, Peggy Davis and Judy Barlow; two brothers, Billy Stables of Matoaka and Roger Lee Stables and wife Paula of Beckley. A very special love and appreciation goes to caregivers, Mary, Debbie and Idenna. Also a sincere thank you for the kindness and compassion of Amedisys Hospice Care.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Friday April 20, 2017 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with the Rev. Ralph Calfee and Rev. Jamie Mattox officiating. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton.
