Erik's Story

Text size

Erik Andrew Stephens, 40, died peacefully in his Waxhaw, North Carolina home on Sunday, February 18, 2018. At the time of his passing, he was with the two great loves of his life, Erin, his wife of almost 14 years, and his precious daughter, Rylee.
Others left to mourn the sudden loss of this loving, charismatic, funny man include his parents, Joseph and Barbara Straub; his sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Victor De Oliveira; and his nephew, Liam, all of Blacksburg, Virginia, Erik's hometown and home to his much loved Virginia Tech Hokies.
He will also be missed by his in-laws, Ernest and Beth Hays of Bluefield, West Virginia and a host of aunts, uncles and cousins, as well as his loyal Golden Retriever, Maddie.
Erik took great pleasure in his friends. He never met a stranger, so his friends are plentiful and varied. The absence of his cheerful, booming greetings, enthusiastic fist bumps and warm hugs will be felt by so many, as will his flawless dance and lip syncing performance of "Ice, Ice Baby."
In 2001, Erik graduated from East Tennessee State University, where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon and enjoyed being a competitive swimmer and swimming coach. After graduation, Erik moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, where he began his career. He was a dedicated and award-winning loan officer for Supreme Lending. While working full time and being an active and involved father and husband, Erik proudly earned his MBA from Arizona State University in 2015.
Erik was service and community oriented. He was an Eagle Scout and had a love for children's charities. He was a tireless member of the Belk Bowl Committee, an organization that combined his love of football and Charlotte.
He was a passionate golfer and an avid runner. Having completed several half marathons, Erik was training for his first marathon.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2018, at the family's church, St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, 8515 Rea Road, Waxhaw.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to "Show Your Love for Rylee Stephens", a Go Fund Me page that was created to help for the continued care and education of Erik's young daughter, (https://www.gofundme.com/show-your-love-for-rylee-stephens).
