Eloise Z. Powell, age 96, crossed over to Gloryland in the arms of Angels on January 24, 2018 following a brief stay at Mercer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Eloise was born at home, the 1st child of 10 children to the late John M. and Lillie M. Belcher. She was "Big Sis" to all her siblings and a "Daddy's Girl".
Eloise graduated from Elkhorn High School and graduated from Storer College an all-black preparatory school as did her college sweetheart (Sessley) her future husband. She went to Bluefield State College where she graduated on August 21, 1942 with a BS in Secondary Education. She taught English for a number of years in the Northfork area and was a substitute teacher.
On June 23, 1943 they married and to this union a daughter was born. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Jacqueline (Jackie) of the home; grandson, Derek Harris; great-granddaughter, Sierra Harris all of Bradley, WV; granddaughter, Eloise Coeburn and family of Bluefield, VA. She will be cherished by a sister, Sandra Belcher of Philadelphia, PA; four brothers, Shirley Belcher of Mansfield, OH, Lorenzo Belcher of Cincinnati, OH, Rev. Jimmy Belcher of Lebanon, VA, and Milton Belcher of Ocala, FL.
Eloise was an avid reader, reading her bible, working crossword puzzles, playing Boggle, Connect Four, and planting her garden for many years.
Eloise joined the Rice Chapel Missionary Baptist Church where she was a faithful Member, Assistant Clerk, and then Clerk until it's closing in 1988. In 1989, she joined the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, being a faithful Member, Assistant Clerk and then Clerk. Following it's closing in 2003, she joined the First Baptist of McDowell being a faithful Member for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Lillie Belcher; a sister, Myrtle Johnson; three brothers, Samuel, Billy, and Bobby.
To us you were someone very special and in our hearts you will live forever, because We "LOVE YOU SO".
Homegoing services to celebrate the life of Eloise Zenobia Powell will be held 1:00PM Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at Roselawn Funeral Home, 450 Courthouse Road, Princeton with her brother Dr. Rev. Jimmy Belcher delivering the Eulogy. Following the services, Eloise will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband, Sessley at Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Garden of the Cross, Princeton.
Friends may gather with the family from 12:00PM until time of the service Wednesday at the funeral home.
