Douglas Noah Gills, 84, of Rock, WV peacefully passed away on Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at his home.
Doug was born on June 4, 1933 in Roderfield, WV to parents Ray and Hazel (Smith) Gills. He graduated from Bramwell High School in 1952 and also attended Emory and Henry College and McLane's Business School.
He was a proud veteran - serving in both the United States Army and United States Air Force - and earned the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was also a prominent businessman - having owned and managed two Amoco Filling Stations, a mine service repair, and a mine in Algoma, WV. He was an avid outdoorsman.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Krislin Helmondollar, and two siblings, Alma Collins and Richard Gills.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 52 years, Bonnie (Webb) Gills; children: Rhonda (Terry) Helmondollar, Jonathan (Manja) Gills, Patricia (Jay) Byrd; and grandchildren: Travis (Victoria) Helmondollar, Joshua (Sarah) Helmondollar, Audrie Helmondollar, Naomi Gills, James Gills, and Rebekah Gills.
Services will be held at Cravens-Shires Funeral Home on Thursday, October 5, 2017 at 7:00PM with Rev. Omar Burns and Rev. Mac Riggins officiating. The Mercer County Veterans Honor Guard will conduct the interment service at Roselawn Memorial Gardens on Friday, October 6 at 11:00AM where friends and family will serve as pallbearers.
Family and friends wishing to attend are asked to be at Cravens-Shires Funeral Home at 10:30AM.
The family will receive loved ones 5:00 - 7:00PM at the funeral home on Thursday, October 05, 2017.
