Darrell's Story

Text size

BLUEFIELD, WV Darrell Eugene Hicks was born in Bluefield, West Virginia on November 22, 1941 and lived in Mercer County all his life. He went to dwell in the House of his Lord on December 7, 2017.
Raised in Bluewell, Darrell never stopped loving the people and culture of West Virginia and Southern food. He attended Bluefield State College and went on to work for Consol Energy at Pocahontas, Virginia's Central Shop and retired there at age 55.
He was preceded in death by his parents Everette Johnson and Verlie Meadows Hicks of Bluewell, two brothers Sonny and Benny and a sister Arnolene Snapp.?
Darrell was strongly committed to his family. He enjoyed his grandchildren and watching them play in their various activities, always on the sidelines as a cheering fan. He loved spending time with his daughter Jennifer, renewing her furniture, or helping her decorate and plant her vegetable gardens. As a couple Darrell and Betty spent a marriage of fifty one years collecting antique American furniture and decorative arts while they enjoyed living in the midst of their finds. Darrell loved woodworking and was an expert at building furniture. He loved golfing with his buddies at Wolf Creek Golf Club, hunting, fishing, WVU football, strumming on his Guitar or Fiddle. He was known to supply an appropriate quotation for any given situation and loved a good story and often regaled his friends with long and sometimes circuitous tales.?
Darrell is survived by his wife Betty and much loved daughter Jennifer. Other family members also include: son-in-law Brian, his three grandchildren Josh, Hannah and Jaron of Bland Virginia. In addition there are numerous nieces and nephews, one sister Bonnie in Loveland, Colorado in a long term care facility, and a sister Rita in Orlando, Florida.
You are invited to a celebration of life Sunday, December 10th at Mercer Funeral Home promptly at 3PM officiated by Rev. Olen Robertson and Dr. Don Scott. The family will receive friends from 2:30 p.m. until the service hour.
