Claude's Story

Claude J. Sutherland, 92 of North Tazewell, VA passed away peacefully at Tazewell Community Hospital. Born March 21, 1924 at Cleveland, VA, he was a son of the late Elmore and Polly Rasnake Sutherland. He was a US Air Force Veteran of World War, II, member of the VFW, retired coal miner, and member of UMWA Local #17. Claude was loved and was prayed for by Tazewell Family Worship Center and received the best of care by the staff of 3W at Princeton Community Hospital and the staff of Heritage Hall in Tazewell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his faithful wife of sixty years, Rachel Sutherland; two sisters, five brothers.
He is survived by his daughter, Claudette French of North Tazewell, VA; son, Larry Sutherland and wife, Mae of North Tazewell, VA; son in law, Bill French of Tazewell, VA; granddaughters, Tara Brewster of North Tazewell, VA., Andrea Sutherland and special friend, Hope of Christiansburg, VA; grandson, Brian Sutherland and wife, Tina of Wytheville, VA; great grandchildren, Tyler Hancock and Alana Sutherland of North Tazewell, VA, Jonathan Sutherland of Wytheville, VA, and Isaac Sutherland of Princeton, WV; sister, Kathleen Stevenson of Portlow, VA; special family, Junior and Betty Sutherland of North Tazewell, VA; "his girls" Charlotte, Belinda, Peggy, and Ellie all of Tazewell, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors that he loved dearly.
The family will receive friends from after 5:30 PM Thursday, February 16, 2017 at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell, VA where "A joyous celebration of the life he lived" will be conducted at 7:30 PM with Pastors Lawrence Hayes and Don Waddell officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 PM Friday, February 17, 2017 at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA where military graveside rites will be conducted by members of the Barns Beavers VFW Post #7136 of Tazewell, VA. Those planning to attend graveside services are asked to meet at Peery & St.Clair Funeral Home by 1:30 PM Friday for procession.
