Charles's Story

PRINCETON — Charles S. Short, 66, of Princeton, died Thursday, January 19, 2017 at Charleston Area Medical Center. Born December 20, 1950, in Bluefield, he was the son of the late Curtis Nelson Short, Sr., and Margaret Harriett Parsell Short.
Charles had been a resident of Princeton since 1963, moving here from Mullens. He was a 1970 graduate of Princeton High School. He then began his career with Princeton Telecable, later Charter Communications, and retired after several years with Suddenlink. He had also worked for 2-way radio, OH-9, and Childers Oil.
At the age of 16, Charles began his honorable Firefighter position with East River Volunteer Fire Department. He was a lifetime member with a legacy that spanned over 47 years. He worked his way from Fireman to Assistant Chief and touched so many lives in Mercer County and beyond. He was also currently serving as a Wildland Firefighter for the Division of Forestry. Charles was a true hero and will be greatly missed.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Linda Kay Childers Short; grandson, Shawn Austin Harris; and father-in-law, Jim Childers.
He is survived by his daughters, Amy Short Burnette of Princeton, and Stacy Short Harris and her husband Shawn of Bluefield, VA; grandchildren, Paige Burnette, Katelyn Burnette Beavers, Emily Harris, and Camryn Harris; great grandchildren, Declan Burnette, Jase Beavers, and Eli Beavers; brother, Nelson Short and his wife Kathy of Princeton; niece, Renee Short of Princeton; mother-in-law, Erma Childers of Princeton; and the many friends and brothers of the East River Volunteer Fire Department.
A service to celebrate the life of Charles will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 23, 2017, at the George W. Seaver Chapel of Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton with Reverend Danny Gunnoe officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. Pallbearers will be East River Volunteer Fire Department Firefighters. Honorary pallbearers will be Division of Forestry Personnel. Firefighter Funeral Honors will be provided by East River Volunteer Fire Department and Beckley Fire Department Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, January 22, 2017, at the funeral home.
