Carl's Story

Christ's servant died February 19, 2018. Born March 26, 1937 in Annapolis, MD where he attended schools, Carl was a son of the late Carl Strohm Thomas, Sr. and Dorothy Purvis Thomas. He graduated from Washington & Lee University in 1959, served and was medically discharged from the U.S. Army.
Carl moved to Bluefield in 1963 where he worked at Citizens Coal and Supply Company and Pure Oil Company, and became president of Citizens Building Supply and Home Center upon the retirement of James Chapman Borden. He dedicated much time and resources to Bible in the Schools, Bluefield Union Mission and his church, Christ Episcopal. Carl was also an avid toy collector, a member and treasurer for 20 years of Antique Toys of America, and a member of the Toy Train Collector most of his life.
Carl is survived by his wife Linda Borden Thomas of the home, children: Carl Strohm Thomas, III and wife Staci Stafford Thomas, their daughter Caroline Borden Thomas of Bluefield, WV, daughter Susan Chapman Thomas Brand and husband Alex Jefferson Brand and their daughter Carly Ursa Brand of Lewisburg, WV, his youngest daughter Missy Thomas and Mattie the cat of Bluefield, WV, his brother James Oliver Thomas and his wife Julie Thomas of Atlanta, GA, niece Tara Lee and husband Scott and their children Hunter and Julia, nephew Britt Thomas and his children Brooke, Leah and Ashley.
Services will be held Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, the Reverend Chad Slater officiating.
Remembrances, in lieu of flowers may be made to the Bluefield Union Mission, the Wade Center and Christ Episcopal Church food pantry.
