ASHVILLE, N.C. — Barbara Sue Wheeler, 73, of Ashville, NC, formerly of Princeton, WV, passed away Sunday, January 29, 2017, at Missions Hospital in Ashville.
She was born May 21, 1943 in Iaeger, WV. She was the daughter of the late Hassel Richmond Blankenship of Harlan, KY, and Mildred Jean Parsons Blankenship. She was a graduate of Marshall University with a Bachelor's degree in Special Education.
In the 1970's, Sue was an award winning special needs teacher in Ohio and went on to create and implement ground breaking curriculum in her field. Prior to taking over the family coal business in the 1980's, Sue earned her Master's degree in Business from Ohio State University. She was a highly accomplished business woman, owning and operating numerous coal, natural gas, and timber holding companies.
Sue had been a resident of Ashville since 2012 where she enjoyed the company of her daughter and engaged in an active social life. Sue was committed to numerous charitable works in both Princeton and Ashville. She was a member of Fairview Christian Community Church in Princeton, but always identified as an evangelical Quaker, harkening back to her religious foundation in southern Ohio.
Sue is now reunited with her loving husband, Sid. She was a fantastic mother and friend and will forever be missed.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Sidney L. "Sid" Wheeler.
She is survived by her daughter, Suzanna Lea Wheeler of Ashville; brother-in-law, Eric Wheeler and his wife Christine of St. Clairsville, OH; nephew, Eric Lane Wheeler of Columbus, OH; and special friend, Sue Heartwell of Princeton.
Private services were held Thursday, February 02, 2017, at Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton. Burial followed at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
