Anna "Elaine"'s Story
Anna "Elaine" Carley (Straley), 87, formerly of Matoaka, returned to her heavenly home on November 15, 2017.
Born on June 26, 1930 in Giatto, she was a daughter of the late Ted and Martha Conner. She spent most of her life in Matoaka where she raised her family, worked at the Bailey Lumber Co. and eventually joined the Mercer County Sheriff Department as the first female deputy. Proudly, in 1976, she was awarded deputy of the year.
Elaine moved to Sarasota Florida in the mid 1980s where she became a certified nursing assistant and spent 20 years caring for the elderly. Her firm belief in God and support of Dr. David Jeremiah's Turning Points Ministries, provided peace during her illness.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by one brother, Donnie Conner and former husband William "Bill" Straley
Survivors include two sons, Kevin Straley and his wife Tina of Bradenton Fla., and William Howard "Bill" Straley II of Bristol Tenn.; one daughter, Sharon Cecil of Sarasota Fla.; one brother Stuart Conner of Princeton WV., and one sister Carol Piersall of Sarasota Fla.; five grandchildren, Mackenzie Straley of Bradenton, Fla., Shelley Straley Matthews of Birmingham Ala., Noel Jenkins of Orange Va., Mark Shannon Cecil of Houston, Texas, and Heather Cecil of Sarasota, Fla.; five great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
