Albert L.'s Story
Albert L. "Pete" Smothers, Jr., 83 of Bluefield, VA, went home to be with the Lord Friday, November 17, 2017.
Born in Bluefield, WV, he was the son of the late Albert Lonzo Smothers Sr. and Kathleen Stowers Smothers Hopkins. He was a 1954 graduate of Beaver High School. After graduation, he worked at Southside Motors until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1956, having served at Ft. Jackson, SC, Ft. Rucker, AL and Ft. George G. Meade, MD. Following discharge in 1958, he served in the Army Reserves.
Mr. Smothers began his career in the mailroom at The Bluefield Daily Telegraph and began his apprenticeship as a pressman. He received his credentials as a pressman, while serving at The Bluefield Daily Telegraph. In 1966, he relocated to College Park, MD and became a pressman at The Washington Star, Washington, DC until 1977. In 1977, he and his family returned to Bluefield, VA and went to work at Evans Chevrolet, (which later became Cole Chevrolet) where he was Truck Manager. In 1982, he was employed as a Deputy with the Tazewell County Sheriff's Department. He was a Court Bailiff and Chief Deputy, at the time of his retirement in 2000. He spent several years enjoying retirement in his RV in Winter Haven, FL and played lots of golf. He was also an avid NASCAR fan - an extension of his love of hotrods and racing. He was a member of the Bluefield Roadrunners Club. He was Virginia Tech Hokies fan and enjoyed watching sports on television. He loved solving crossword puzzles and the Jumble every day.
Pete had previously attended Graham Christian Church and in the past few years, enjoyed the ministry of Joel Osteen on television. He was a Mason, affiliated with the Harman Lodge #222 in Bluefield, VA.
In addition to his parents, Pete was preceded in death by sisters: Dorothy White Clark and Stella Mae Jackson.
He will be lovingly and affectionately remembered by his wife: Nancy Gale Tabor Smothers; his daughter: Kimberly Gale Mohr (George) of Surf City, NC; 2 grandsons: Jason Haddock and John Haddock of Greenville, NC; sister: Maggie Jane Muncy (Ben) of Bluefield, VA; his beloved fur-baby: Miss Muffin.
Entombment services to celebrate Pete's life will be held Monday, November 20, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at Grandview Memory Mausoleum Chapel with Rev Donnie Lee Bailey, Jr. officiating. There will be no public visitation. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at Grandview Memory Mausoleum Chapel no later than 10:45 A.M. In honor of his 18 years of service to the Tazewell County Sheriff's Department, officers and family members will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
The family would like to thank the Doctors, Nurses and the entire staff of 3 South at Bluefield Regional Medical Center for the wonderful care and concern given to Mr. Smothers during his illness.
